Synopsis[]
Kyla is on the way to her mother, Stella Connor, and the place she was raised, but some things don't add up when she arrives. According to the time of her real birthday, she was already 16 when Slated, but she was age tested by her cells and was under 16. Also, when she arrives there are no small baby photos of when she is younger than about 9 months despite the fact that her mother is a photio fanatic. She also experiences a return to her childhood in many ways; including seeing her old cat Pounce which triggered her memories of Lucy to return; remembering her father's death trying to rescue her from Nico and Doctor Craig when she was only 10, and remembering a conversation between her grandmother Astrid Connor, JCO of England and her mother which reveals Stella is not her real mother. As Nico catches up with her and she makes horrific discoveries sending her running back to MIA and Aiden who feels more for her than he first let on, how can she ever find out who she is, why people are trying to get her so hard, if nothing and no one will tell her the truth?
Plot
Kyla is on her way to see her mother, Stella, to find out her true identity. Before she can do this, however, she must mask her identity. So Kyla goes to get IMET, an illegal genetic technology that changes her hair color and face to make her look older. Her Imet doctor is DJ, who is another agent for MIA. She also gets issued a fake ID with the name of Riley Kain, which combines the three names she had (Lucy, Kyla, and Rain.)
Riley travels by train to see her mother. In the middle of the route, the train stops and Lorders come in to check ID and do retinal eye scans. Kyla is worried because if her retinas are scanned they will match the dead Kyla's, but the Lorders take away a mother and son on the train before they get to her. Kyla is half relieved, half horrified.
When Riley arrives at Keswick, she goes to Waterfall House, a teen girl residence run by her mother and her place to stay while training for CAS (Cumbrian Apprenticeship Scheme.) She finally comes face to face with her mother but has to pretend she doesn't know her as there are other girls she meets also. Madison, a girl staying there, is shocked when she finds out Riley will be staying in the tower room where no other girls are allowed and makes fun of Stella for it.
At dinner that night, Ellie, another girl staying at Waterfall House, is late and Stella says no dinner, showing how strict she is about the rules.
After lights out Stella comes to Kyla's room. She is finally able to ask if this girl is her Lucy, and seems thrilled, but Kyla tells her to call her Riley so no one finds out her true identity. They talk for a bit with Pounce, Lucy's cat who has come back through memories. Kyla tells Stella about the AGT's plan to fracture her personality, and Stella seems hurt when Kyla tells her the only memories that have come back are the memories of Rain the AGT agent and not before the AGT. Stella unlocks a closet full of photos of Lucy, which she closes when Kyla asks her why her dad Danny was not in the photos, ending their conversation rather abruptly.
